The Longest Paddle

Maligne Lake is a 22.3km long lake that is nestled in the northern Alberta Rockies near Jasper. A spur of the moment decision to paddle this lake was one of the best last minute ideas I’ve ever had, and most of my ideas are very last minute! The reward for this 7+ hour paddle? Spirit Island.

The island is about 14km down the lake near the narrows and during the summer tour boats can take you here. When I phoned to book a canoe from the boat house on the lake I was told they were done for the season. Where there is a will there is a way, so I picked up a rental from our local “High Level Canoe” shop in Lethbridge, AB and strapped that cherry red canoe to the roof of my moms SUV. Here is what we found that wonderful fall weekend.

Sunrise was a bit of a bust on our way down the lake. We woke up at 4am to catch the sunrise at Spirit Island, however paddling in the dark was not a smart idea. We got so scared we pulled over on shore and waited until the sun came up to light the way.

After 4 hours we made it to the narrows with sore arms but high spirits!

Mandy was kind enough to paddle around while I shot photos of her. Basically I just yelled a bunch of directions of where I wanted the canoe, in a nice way.

The long paddle back. We got back in three hours of frustrating paddling and then I made the long 7h drive home from Jasper.
